common questions
Walk & Talk Therapy is a form of counselling that takes place outdoors, walking side-by-side with your therapist in a natural setting. It combines the benefits of traditional talk therapy with the calming effects of being in nature and gentle movement.
Not necessarily. Before your first session, you’ll be sent a brief fitness and mobility assessment to help determine if Walk & Talk Therapy is a good fit for you. Sessions are designed to be gentle and supportive, and we choose trails that align with your comfort and ability level. It’s not about exercise—it’s about being present in nature while engaging in meaningful conversation. We can pause, rest, or adjust the pace at any time.
Weather is part of the experience! However, if it’s unsafe (heavy rain, snow, storms, extreme cold), we’ll reschedule or move the session online, depending on your preference.
Absolutely. This can be a gentle and approachable way to begin therapy, especially if sitting face-to-face feels intimidating.
Sessions typically last 50 minutes in duration, just like a standard therapy appointment.
Yes. Many clients find that walking in nature helps them feel more relaxed and open, which can actually enhance the therapeutic process. That said, it’s always your choice—some prefer traditional sessions, and others enjoy combining both.
Dress comfortably and for the weather—layers, waterproof shoes, and sunscreen or bug spray if needed. You may also want to bring water.
Yes, confidentiality is still a priority, even in an outdoor setting. We choose quieter, low-traffic trails to help maintain privacy. If we encounter others during a session, we can pause the conversation or switch topics temporarily. During your intake session, we’ll also discuss how you’d like to handle situations where you might see someone you know—whether you prefer to introduce me as a friend or take another approach. Your comfort and privacy guide how we navigate those moments.
Forest Walk & Talk Therapy sessions currently take place on quieter, less busy trails located about 15–20 minutes outside of Sydney River. These locations are chosen intentionally to support privacy, comfort, and a deeper connection to nature.
If you prefer to meet closer to town, we can absolutely discuss that option—just keep in mind that more public areas may offer less privacy. We’ll talk about what feels right for you and choose a location that aligns with your comfort level and therapeutic goals.
If your plan covers counselling or psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist/Registered Counselling Therapist/Clinical Counsellor, then Walk & Talk sessions are likely covered. Please check with your provider.
